Teacher: Kati Kuusemets

Kati Kuusemets is a designer and craft master who currently creates and develops her own textile and craft brand, KUU handmade. She graduated from the UT Viljandi Culture Academy with a degree in Native Textiles (2018). Her previous education and daily work involve the field of theatre and texts. Kati considers design and craft also to be like texts and writing, only the language and the letters are different. She has been doing handicrafts since childhood, continuing to gain knowledge about new craft techniques and materials. Kati enjoys a wide range of handicraft techniques, from ribbon plaiting to weaving on looms. Her main interest is in combining the old and the new, interpreting native heritage through a modern lens, as expressed in the circle scarf she will be instructing at this year's Craft Camp. Reusing materials has become important in Kati’s creation process - creating new beauty and values out of something that is already there. Find Kati's handicraft on her website, Facebook and Instagram.

The patchwork circle scarf designed by Kati Kuusemets is inspired by Estonian native garments. The design of the scarf is inspired by folk costume shirts which have red embroidery around the neckline and sleeves as magical repellent elements that were believed to keep evil and bad away from the wearer's body. The ancient protective meaning of red edges has been carried over to the scarf, which forms a protective circle around the neck.

The finished cotton circle scarf has a minimalist modern look. The scarf can also be worn as a hood for wind protection. In the workshop, a circle scarf in soft cotton fabric is made with a patchwork border in red multicoloured fabrics.

The course starts with designing the scarf and choosing fabrics. During the workshop, patchwork tools such as cutting mats, rotary cutters and sewing machines will be used. The participation fee includes the fabrics needed for making one scarf and the use of the tools on site. This sewing course is suitable for beginners and people with little sewing experience.
