Traditional Leatherwork: Pouch

Teacher: Egge Edussaar-Harak

Egge Edussaar-Harak graduated from Tartu Art College in 2009, specialising in leather design and restoration. In addition to that, she has graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts, specialising in metal art. Egge is interested in archeological findings and techniques for making them (metal, leather, bone, etc). She is a lecturer of metalcrafts and leatherwork at Viljandi Culture Academy bachelor’s programme of Native Crafts.
Egge has conducted various workshops on metal, leather and bone processing, both in Estonia and abroad. In 2015, she established her own craft company, Ravencrafts OÜ.

Pouches have been useful accessories for people since the beginning of time. They help carry personal items. There can be simple or elaborate pouches, it is all a personal choice. We are going to use traditional stamp-tooling. All stamping tools are made by Egge by the examples of archaeological finds in Estonia (mostly used on Viking age jewellery). This technique has also been used in book cover design since medieval times.

The workshop will be fully practical, including the following parts:

• Introduction and patterns
• Material and cutting out pouch details
• Personal decoration of the pouch
• Sewing and finishing

Each participant will receive the following materials in the workshop: vegetable tanned hide, needles, tools for decorating, dyes, thread and beeswax. The general participation fee includes only a part of the materials, an extra fee of 20€ will be added to the invoice for the participants who choose this workshop.

This workshop is suitable for beginners, no previous knowledge about leather is needed.
