Workshop "Recycled Paper Basketry"

Teacher: Margus Rebane

Margus Rebane (born in 1968) grew up in the middle of the bogs and forests of Pärnumaa. He learned basket weaving and other types of woodworking from his grandfather as a boy. Margus has now been making baskets for 35 years, and he has been a teacher for 15 years of that time. He has conducted various courses on basket weaving and stone carving in Estonia, Norway, Israel, Uzbekistan and other countries, and he has participated in various thematic exhibitions in Estonia, Lithuania and Israel.

This technique is similar to the ancient method of birch bark weaving using a plain or twill weave. The material used in this workshop is modern, and its preparation includes tearing and folding. Using these techniques, suitable strips of paper are made for weaving. Joining the strips is one of the most important skills the participants will learn during the workshop.

Magazines, advertisements, newspapers and all other paper-like materials may be used. The teacher will bring materials suitable for weaving; however, participants may also bring newspapers, magazines and posters that they like. If anyone wishes to make a "Viljandi 2022" weaving, they can also find local materials.

During the course, participants will complete at least 2 different projects according to their preference: boxes, mats, rugs, or bags.

The participation fee includes all necessary tools and materials.

The course is suitable for beginners and intermediates.
