Workshop "Knitted Colorwork Pouch with Seto Men’s Stocking Pattern"

Teacher: Sigre Andreson

Sigre Andreson graduated from the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy with a degree in National Textiles (2016) and an MA in Heritage Technology (2019). She lives in Setomaa in southeastern Estonia, one of the most fascinating areas of traditional culture in Estonia. She has worked as head of the Seto Museum in Obinitsa and established the Seto Handicraft Kogo (2006), an organization that unites Seto artisans, of which she is a board member to this day. She has been the project manager for several traditional Seto handicraft books (tablet-woven belts, crochet lace, bobbin lace) and is the author of a pattern book for Seto men's socks. She works as a handicraft teacher at Meremäe School. She also organizes rural life and handicraft workshops at the 143-year-old Rikka Ivvan Farm.

Seto men's folk costumes include hand-knitted patterned stockings. Older stocking patterns consisted of brown tones from undyed wool on a white background, but newer patterns have more red combined with purple, yellow, green and blue tones. Seto men's stockings are knitted without shaping the heel: "The heel will find its own place!"

During the workshop, a small bag with a Seto men's stocking pattern will be made which will fit a mobile phone or other smaller items.

The participation fee includes woollen yarn and knitting needles. This workshop is suitable for advanced participants who have prior experience in knitting.
