We are the company Etnowerk - Estonian brand of handcrafted cardigans full of emotion, bold beauty and ethnographic motifs. Our handicraft education is from UT Viljandi Culture Academy.

Annika is the embroidery queen. She makes the finest embroideries to decorate knitwear. Inspiration comes from folk costumes and the outcome is modern clothing for a modern woman.

Liina is the master of colours and bold decorations. She mixes crocheted ethnographic laces with different textiles and uses these combinations on knitwear. The colourful result makes everyone happy – both the wearers and the admirers.

In this workshop we discover the beauty of Estonian ethnographic lace from Hiiumaa and Muhu island. These laces are made with a very fine hook. Muhu lace is as colourful as their other folk clothing, Hiiumaa lace is more subdued white. Historically these laces were used widely on women’s costumes and can be used nowadays as well.

In Hiiumaa lace, all rows are crocheted from the right side of the work.
The work is not turned when each row ends, but instead the thread is cut off at the end of each row, and the new row starts again from the beginning of the right side of the work. The stitches are worked through the back loop, which will create a ridged effect and add texture on the right side of the surface of the lace.

In the workshop, participants learn to crochet delicate Hiiumaa/Muhu laces using a fine crochet hook and cotton thread, and several samples will be made. Samples will be used to decorate a ready-made linen apron (size of apron: 55 x 60 cm). You can choose between the two types of crochet - for beginners we recommend starting with Hiiu lace, advanced crocheters have time to learn both during the workshop.
