Workshop "Engraving Bone with a Pump Drill"

Monika Hint has been researching bone processing technologies during her master’s studies at University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy (2013). Her company, Koordikamber grew out of her master’s thesis "Bone items: raw material, processing technologies and product development".

Koordikamber makes bone and skin items and experiments with technologies and materials. Making bone items is her way to produce durable and valuable items out of natural material and a way to honor the ancestors, their economic way of thinking and living.

A pump drill has been used for boring holes and starting fires; it can also be used to engrave cup marks of varying depths. Traditional and other fascinating patterns can be created by filling in the carved areas with beeswax pigments. Participants in the course will learn to handle a pump drill, prepare bone for engraving and filling the carved-out areas with beeswax pigment.

During the course, the participant will fashion a small plaque of bone on which they will engrave an original pattern as dots (with samples serving as a example). A ribbon or strap will be woven and an adjustable fastening of bone will be made. The work can be adapted as a necklace or wrist bracelet or ankle bracelet.

Generally, taking ready-made bone items to foreign countries should be allowed, once it’s been processed and is not a raw material. Participation fee includes the bone, ribbon materials and bee wax dyes for the chosen item, also the use of pump drill.

The workshop is suitable for beginners.
