University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy opened a brand new master’s programme Sound and Visual Technology. From the 2nd of January, it is possible to apply for the English-taught curriculum in Sound and Visual Technology, which is waiting for students from abroad and from Estonia. The international students can submit their application in DreamApply. The sound and visual technology are two of the most engaging and rapidly developing fields in culture.

On Saturday, 1 December, the University of Tartu celebrates the 99th anniversary of the Estonian national university. At the anniversary ceremony, doctorates and honorary doctorates are conferred and the award for contribution to national identity is presented. During the week, many fascinating anniversary events take place at the university – for students, alumni and all those interested.

On the 23rd of November, a new board of advisors gathered in Viljandi Culture Academy to discuss the present and the future course of the academy.

On the 21st of November, Izumi Ashizawa's master class for theatre and dance students will take place in Ugala theatre. Izumi Ashizawa is a Japanese director, dramatist, actor, dancer and choreographer and a lecturer in the New York Stony Brook University. Ashizawa is telling stories through physical self-expression, dolls and items.

On Friday the 16th of November Viljandi Culture Academy will host a conference on heritage technology on the topic "Workshops and tools". In addition, the new edition of Studia Vernacula is introduced and Anu Raua's scholarship is handed out. The focus of the conference is on hand-craft tools and work environment as a development and research object. The practicians, who will speak, are giving the sense to work environments and tools. During their presentations, they will stop on the history of generating tools and on the current situation.

On the 24rh of October Made, a series of concerts will start its second season. 8 folk and jazz bands will take the stage in one evening.

Viljandi Culture Academy’s alumni Ursula Rummel’s performance “|ÜLE|” will perform on the 4th of October in the University of Arts Helsinki.

University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy will host the 2018 IASJ meeting from July 2-7, 2018. Representatives, students and lecturers taking part in the IASJ meeting (International Association for Schools of Jazz) will discuss pedagogical, philosophical and administrative issues. The event is also a great opportunity to make new contacts, make music together and gain valuable experience. Throughout the event there will also be three concerts that are open to everyone interested. The concerts take place in the Traditional Music Centre.

University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy Native Crafts Department will host this year’s Nordic Knitting Symposium (NKS) in Viljandi from June 25 to July 1, 2018. The event will bring together more than a hundred participants from the Nordic countries, Germany, Japan, Republic of Korea, England and the United States of America.

With great sorrow, the University of Tartu announces the unexpected death of Rector Volli Kalm on Saturday, December 23. Volli Kalm was born on February 10, 1953 in Vändra. He graduated from the University of Tartu in 1976 with a degree in geology. In 1984, Kalm earned his PhD in geology from the Estonian Academy of Sciences after successfully defending his doctoral thesis "Formation, composition and usage of glaciofluvial deposits in Estonia." From 1988-1989, he attended postdoctoral studies in the geology department of the University of Alberta.

At the extraordinary senate session on 27 December, the senate of the University of Tartu unanimously appointed professor Tõnu Lehtsaar as the acting rector. In his speech to the senate, Lehtsaar said that his primary goal as the university’s acting rector is to maintain stability and find a new rector. “We will keep the university going. I asked members of the Rector’s Office at the meeting this morning if they were willing to continue in their office. I didn’t expect them to answer right away, but they confirmed that we will go forward together,” he said.
