University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy will host the 2018 IASJ meeting from July 2-7, 2018. Representatives, students and lecturers taking part in the IASJ meeting (International Association for Schools of Jazz) will discuss pedagogical, philosophical and administrative issues. The event is also a great opportunity to make new contacts, make music together and gain valuable experience. Throughout the event there will also be three concerts that are open to everyone interested. The concerts take place in the Traditional Music Centre.
The focal point of the IASJ is the Annual Jazz Meeting held in a different country each year. This is the first time Viljandi has the honour to host the meeting.
“Viljandi Culture Academy was accepted as a member in 2007 and five years ago it was mentioned that Viljandi could become a potential host in 2018. During the Lisbon meeting it was officially announced that Viljandi will host the meeting” said Tuulike Kivestu, the head of the Centre for Arts and the main organizer of the event. She first attended such a meeting back in 2008 in Riga.
The association is one of the most successful promoters of jazz education in the world and Ms. Kivestu believes that taking part in the annual meeting is a privilege: “Since only one student from each school can take part in the meeting, it is also a great motivator for the students to be chosen. All the students who have represented Viljandi Culture Academy in various meetings really appreciate and value the experience and opportunity. Taking part in the meeting allows them to learn together and make music with the best of the best from all around the world.”
Throughout the IASJ week a number of public concerts will be open to the wider audiences. There will be a Teacher’s Concert (teachers from the participating schools) on Tuesday, July 3. On July 6 and 7 Final Concerts will be held. Those concerts will be a great reflection of the work done throughout the week. All of the concerts will take place in the Traditional Music Center and are free to attend. On Monday, July 2 a concert dedicated to Veljo Tormis will be held in the Traditional Music Center. Tickets for that concert are available and cost 5 euros.
IASJ – International Association for Schools of Jazz – was formed in 1989. Membership comes from all the continents and nearly forty countries, ranging from large state-funded conservatories to small privately run schools as well as individual educators and artists. The focal point of the IASJ is the Annual Jazz Meeting held in a different country each year. These meetings enable the most promising students from member schools to participate in international ensembles, jam sessions, recording projects and master classes coached by top level artists from around the world. Attending representatives and teachers from IASJ member schools meet during this period to discuss pedagogical, philosophical and administrative issues. Ongoing student and teacher exchanges result from this interaction as well as the promotion of more performing opportunities for all the participants. The IASJ, through the universal power of jazz music, serves as a positive force towards encouraging cross cultural communication and understanding.
Music with its several specifications such as traditional music, rhythm music, sound engineering and school music, is the most popular curricula in Viljandi Culture Academy. Currently there are 146 students in the department and 44 new students will be accepted this year.
