Shawl with Mulgi Embroidery

We are the company Etnowerk - Estonian brand of handcrafted cardigans full of emotion, bold beauty and ethnographic motifs. Their handicraft education is from UT Viljandi Culture Academy.

Annika is the embroidery queen. She makes the finest embroideries to decorate knitwear. Inspiration comes from folk costumes and the outcome is modern clothing for a modern woman.

Liina is the master of colors and bold decorations. She mixes crocheted ethnographic laces with different textiles and uses these combinations on knitwear. The colorful result makes everyone happy – both the wearers and the admirers.

Archaic embroidery from Mulgi region is a very old style of embroidery that gives a lot of opportunities for usage also nowadays. Historically, these motifs - stylized images from plants and flowers - have been used widely, on medieval church walls, windows and textiles. Mulgi women had several pieces of clothing decorated with this beautiful embroidery - headgears, aprons and big scarves.

In this workshop we first get to know about the motifs, the meaning of them and how to make Mulgi archaic embroidery.

During the 2-day workshop, an embroidered shawl will be made. The woollen machine-knitted fabric for the shawl is going to be provided by the teachers. The embroidery will be made with woollen yarns.

The participation fee includes the embroidery yarns and the machine-knitted fabric for the shawl. The workshop is suitable for participants with previous embroidery experience.
