Historically, heart-shaped brooch served a dual purpose in Estonian folk culture: it was essential for fastening garments, yet equally important as decorative and protective jewelry. Most notably, these brooches were traditionally crafted from silver, and archaeological evidence confirms they were worn in Estonia as early as the 13th century.

During this workshop, you will first be given a brief historical overview of the development and meaning of brooches, highlighting examples from the rich collections of the Estonian National Museum where possible. Following this foundation, we will transition to the practical segment, where you will use traditional metalworking techniques to craft a beautiful heart-shaped brooch with your own hands.

Meet the instructor

Gert Evert, a distinguished graduate of the Viljandi Culture Academy. He has dedicated nine years to the art of metalwork, acquiring both deep technical knowledge and fine practical skills in this noble craft. Testament to his expertise, he is also a founding member of the Estonian Filigree Association, underscoring his significant contribution to the development and popularization of the filigree technique within Estonia.
