Knitting: Pouch with Kihnu Patterns **

Kihnu is a small island in the Baltic Sea, famous for its cultural heritage that's well preserved and alive. The textile tradition is rich and keeps fascinating people from far and beyond.

The workshop is focusing on the cuffs of Kihnu mittens and gloves, using the various techniques created to decorate both everyday and festive items. We´ll learn to knit „kihnu vits”, „täpid” and „pakud” and we´ll combine them to make our own design for a small pouch or a bag to hold a small valuable item, maybe a phone, maybe just a favourite chocolate candy.

The yarn used is 8/2 or 10/2 wool and the set of 5 needles nr 2.0. All the materials will be provided, though you can use your own favourite needles.

Riina Tomberg is a renowned textile artist and passionate educator with deep roots in Estonian heritage. She is a graduate of the Estonian Academy of Arts, specializing in textile design. Her enthusiasm for traditional crafts has led her to participate in expeditions studying the ancient textile techniques of Finno-Ugric peoples.

Today, Riina creates stunning textiles inspired by Estonian heritage at her own studio, Ruut & Triip, located in Kuressaare, Saaremaa. She also serves as a lecturer at the Viljandi Culture Academy, sharing her knowledge with future textile artists.

Riina’s work successfully blends tradition with innovation, creating designs that are both timeless and contemporary.
